Strong chaos induced by close encounters with Ceres and Vesta

چکیده
We consider the full Solar System including (1) Ceres and some of the main asteroids, (2) Pallas, (4) Vesta, (7) Iris, and (324) Bamberga. We show that close encounters among these small bodies induce strong chaotic behavior in their orbits and in those of many asteroids that are much more chaotic than previously thought. Even if space missions will allow very precise measurements of the positions of Ceres and Vesta, their motion will be unpredictable over 400 kyr. As a result, it will never be possible to recover the precise evolution of the Earth’s eccentricity beyond 60 Myr. Ceres and Vesta thus appear to be the main limiting factors for any precise reconstruction of the Earth orbit, which is fundamental for the astronomical calibration of geological timescales. Moreover, collisions of Ceres and Vesta are possible, with a collision probability of 0.2% per Gyr.

Determination of asteroid masses
The masses of the three largest asteroids: (1) Ceres, (2) Pallas and (4) Vesta were determined from gravitational perturbations exerted on respectively 25, 2, and 26 selected asteroids. These masses were calculated by means of the leastsquares method as weighted means of the values obtained separately from the perturbations on single asteroids. Special attention was paid to the selection of the...
متن کاملPhotocentre displacement of minor planets: analysis of Hipparcos astrometry
We present a study of the phase effect (or photocentre offset) on the astrometry of minor planets. Analysis of the high precision Hipparcos observations of the largest asteroids shows the validity of the model. Minor planets Ceres, Pallas, Vesta and Iris show a brightness distribution close to the lunar scattering properties, while Juno and Hebe are found to be more uniformly bright objects. Fo...

متن کاملUs Naval Observatory Ephemerides of the Largest Asteroids
A new set of ephemerides for 15 of the largest asteroids has been produced for use in the Astronomical Almanac. The ephemerides cover the period from 1800 through 2100. The internal uncertainty in the mean longitude at epoch, 1997 December 18, ranges from for 7 Iris through for 65 Cybele, and 0A.05 0A.22 the uncertainty in the mean motion varies from per century for 4 Vesta to per century for 5...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor Co-orbital objects in the main asteroid belt
We have investigated the possibility of main belt asteroids being trapped in the 1:1 resonance with other asteroids. Using contemporary mass estimates for the large asteroids (1) Ceres, (2) Pallas and (4) Vesta, it is found that four asteroids are temporarily trapped in such resonances with Ceres and Vesta during numerical integrations spanning 2 × 106 yr. In particular, the asteroid (1372) Har...
